rules
001. — IMPORTANT! — this blog is based on grrm's a song of ice and fire universe, and will approach the universe as it is in canon. this is a DEAD DOVE DO NOT EAT warning. writing here will reflect that of the source material, including possibly triggering content. heavy, dark, and taboo themes will appear, including but not limited to violence, child death, depression, suicide, murder, misogyny and incest. all of this will be explored in writing and headcanons accordingly to the original work and the universe it establishes. this does not mean i condone or support westerosi standards or targaryen customs, but i am writing characters who do, and who are shaped by those elements in many ways. what i write in a fictional setting does not reflect my real life beliefs and actions in any way - i will simply write accordingly to how the characters would deal with those themes based on what is written in canon material. helaena is married to her brother. they have children. it's literally in the canon material.002. — given the themes and content mentioned above, it should also come as no surprise this is no place for fandom policing and purity culture. i understand writing something doesn't mean endorsing it, that dark themes may be explored in fiction and that doesn't mean writers enjoy those things in real life, and that no one is being harmed by people writing fiction within the rules of a fucked up fictional setting and engaging with content they are ok with seeing (because it can simply be avoided if they aren't!). if you don't understand that, this isn't the place for you. if the casual viewers from the super successful mainstream tv shows can understand that fiction=/=reality i'm sure people on tumblr rpc can understand that too. as a result i will not follow back if your rules state you won't interact with people whose writing includes subjects approached in canon. it's literally in the universe and my stance on it is in my rules. you'll either be softblocked or outright hardblocked. as must be clear by now, this blog deals with heavy themes, and possible violent or sexual content. this is not a safe space for minors.
003. — possibly triggering content will be tagged as trigger cw. while i tag general triggers, feel free to reach out and ask for anything specific to be tagged, and i'll be happy to comply. while my blog deals with dark themes, i want those who follow me to be as comfortable as possible.004. — this blog is mutuals only. i'll only write with people who follow me and who i follow back.005. — i'm always accepting memes and ic asks from mutuals. come into my inbox at any time! prompts have no expiration date here.006. — my portrayal of helaena is influenced by house of the dragon, but it's not based on it. while i watch the show and might take inspiration from it, especially because the book content is so vague, helaena is based mostly on my interpretation and headcanons surrounding what is told in fire and blood. i'll easily adapt to most situations as they happen in the show, but please don't assume my helaena's thoughts, feelings, relationships, and actions will be the same as her tv counterpart.007. — i love shipping. like, really i adore writing romance and discussing headcanons for it. it's far from the only thing i'm interested in, but i do adore shipping. if you're interested in discussing something, i'll always be open to talk about it, as long as you understand that doesn't mean i'll immediately accept, and that sometimes i won't see it for my helaena and won't be interested.008. — i'm mel, 25+, and i get too invested on minor fictional characters all the time. i love asoiaf dearly and have been around the rpc multiple times, including writing helaena under the url fyredreamt. i can also be found at my multi @elegiasts and jaehaera at @morghvlONE LAST THING. it would be lovely if you checked the portrayal notes section by the end of my about page, even if you don't read the rest of it. these are small details i consider relevant, as they diverge greatly from show canon and the most common depiction of helaena.

— personality —
growing up as a princess, helaena was raised to be poised and pleasant. she is well-mannered and polite, though her courtesies, while perfectly presented, are not as much natural aptitude as the result of strenuous effort to play the role she has been assigned.she dreads social interaction for the most part, and is only ever comfortable around a handful of people - even those to varying degrees. as a result, she can come across as quiet, withdrawn or shy. because of that and as a result of the effort she has to make to comply with what is expected of her, these are stressful situations, anxiety-inducing and prone to make her feel uncomfortable and overwhelmed.
while she feels intensely, she doesn't often show it openly. physical contact is not always welcome, but she learned to suppress any manifestation of discomfort to conceal it. this isn't to say she doesn't like being touched at all; she greatly enjoys physical closeness, depending on the person, the situation, and how she is being touched.helaena is creative, and she greatly enjoys activities such as embroidery and painting. she is immensely caring and loves her family dearly, even though that is more easily expressed with some than others.while not aggressive, she won't hesitate to protect those dear to her, being willing to put herself in harm's way before letting them be hurt. at the same time, her kindness and forgiving nature don't mean she forgives everything. helaena is more than capable of resentment, pettiness, and passive-aggressiveness depending on the situation.

— background —
helaena is the second child and only daughter born to king viserys i targaryen and his second wife, queen alicent hightower. while fussy as a baby, she grew into a quiet child, more like to pursue her at times peculiar interests than to trouble her caretakers.from a young age, she was taught and trained to act as a princess, and to let go of anything that didn't fit the role - at least in public. she learned to curtsy, to recognized each house's sigil and words, to follow the same steps and appear polite whenever interacting with other nobles, to dance gracefully even when she wanted none of that. most of all she learned to make her unhappiness hers alone; there were duties to fulfill, a role to play, and no room for not conforming.it was with her dragon she found herself most free, bonding with dreamfyre when she was only ten. despite her young age, she did not hesitate to take to the skies, and would be found in dreamfyre's company as often as she could.
she was married to her older brother, aegon, when they were still teenagers — helaena being fourteen and aegon sixteen. neither had a choice on the matter, as the betrothal (and subsequent wedding) was decided upon by their father, after he was influenced by her mother to not accept the proposal to marry her to jacaerys velaryon, son of her older half-sister rhaenyra.helaena became a mother not long after, giving birth to the twins jaehaerys and jaehaera when she was fifteen. a few years later, she had another child, maelor. she loves all three of them greatly, and can be found with her children more often than not.while she never wished to be queen, it was instilled in her at a young age that this was to be her fate — and a necessary one, so the lives of her brothers would not be at risk due to the challenge they'd pose to rhaenyra's ascension to the throne. helaena is not ambitious; she didn't want a crown, nor does she like the violence that follows viserys' death. she is, however, entirely loyal to her family, and would stand by them no matter what.
portrayal notes. i write helaena as being more involved with what happens around her than the show portrays. for example, fire and blood indicates helaena was among those who spoke up in favor of a diplomatic approach early on in the dance. this suggests she was well aware of the situation and the stakes, and that she not only had an opinion on how to best proceed, but also didn't hesitate in trying to make herself heard by attempting to convince aegon to act more diplomatically. this is much closer to my approach to her character.similarly, i don't think she would've been discarded as an asset for the greens in terms of military strength during the dance initially. helaena was a dragonrider. she loved to fly and she had a very strong bond to dreamfyre. while she was not trained in battle, by the time of the dance dreamfyre was one of the oldest dragons involved, and with a capable rider it would be foolish to disregard her when accounting for the greens' strengths.everything changes post jaehaerys' murder, as the horrible events that transpired broke helaena. she became deeply depressed, and only then did she truly cut herself off from the rest of the world.lastly, while i do keep the series' addition that helaena is a dreamer, my approach to it is different. in the books, dragon dreams are often metaphorical and difficult to understand, leaving an impression but not being clearly indicative of the future - not even perceived as prophetic by the dreamers and those around them a lot of the time. as a result, my take on her can be considerably less cryptic than that the show presents.i also don't acknowledge season 2 in my characterization. anything relative to it involving other characters will have to be plotted first, as my portrayal does not align with the show.
